PHOTO: Mynock at LOSER! Benefit Show 2000

Mynock pics taken at the Roadhouse in Rio Linda, CA for a LOSER! benefit show on March 8, 2000. The other bands that played that night were The Peeping Toms, Society's Disease, The Bondage Brats, Crawlspace and The Numbs.c.ullz. The show was a benefit to raise funds for the first compilation that was to come out on my new LOSER! Enterprises label at the time. Unfortunately, the compilation was never completed due to health problems that forced me to abandon the project. It was a fun show show though. Oh well, I think I only raised about $50 towards the comp. after giving the Numbs.c.ullz some money for gas money. I think I eventually used the funds to release the Crawlspace discography tape I did for their reunion show.

INTERVIEW: Sins Of The Flesh - "Nuclear Bull Christ" Zine

The following is an interview taken from the 8th issue of NUCLEAR BULL CHRIST zine that came out in early 1988.

Sins Of The Flesh were interviewed after another exciting show at The Place in Davis, CA. Sins Of The Flesh are Kevin, Rich and Ken and were interviewed by Slack.

WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT OUR PRESENT GOVERNMENT?
Kevin: Ha, Ha, Ha. I don't like government but I know it's a necessity because there are people who would abuse what they thought was freedom. Goverment is oppression!

DO YOU THINK ANARCHY COULD WORK, I MEAN TRUE ANARCHY?
Kevin: You got to look at it on a personal level. Each person has to live their life to the best of their ability. I'm not naive enough to believe there could a system or non-system, as long as there are humans on Earth there is going to be fighting. The minute you put yourself one notch above someone else then there's an absence of anarchy. Personally, I try to take my ego out of every aspect of my life and be true to myself. Be true to yourself.

WHAT DO YOU THINK WE CAN DO TO LIVE BETTER TOGETHER?
Kevin: Love one another. Look and see where we are all the same because if you really think about it the things you hate about other people is a direct reflection of the things you hate about yourself. I think its important to work on yourself. You feel you need to do something, you need to go protest against the government, the best thing you can do is work on yourself. Became a perfect example.

DO YOU HAVE ANY PLANS FOR THE FUTURE?
Rich: We've got a record coming out but were stuck in the channel of putting it out. In other words to put out a record really takes a lot of work and a lot of dedication from people that are into your music. Tom Street is producing it. First there is the recording, the art work and all the preparation to put it out.

Kevin:
Big thanks to Tom for funding the whole thing and it will be out in it's own time.

WHAT ARE YOUR PERSONAL OPINIONS ON APARTHEID AND U.S. INTERVENTION IN CENTRAL AMERICA?
Kevin: Myself being white, Anglo-saxon, middle class background third generation dude, I feel a lot of guilt. When I see people that don't have...I have almost everything I want, it makes me feel guilty. When I see a white minority ruling over a mass of people in South Africa who don't have a say in government it really makes me said. But things will take their course.

DO YOU THINK THIS CHANGE WILL BE FOR THE BETTER?
Rich: One way or another it's going to change.

Kevin:
In history, every big empire has killed itself off. Those people who refuse to live by the empire's rules are going to survive because they were true to themselves.

Ken:
In this case, if things don't change for the better, destruction could be the only course.

DO YOU FEEL LIKE PART OF THIS COUNTRY?
Rich: I feel like part of the world because as long as there are borders there will be conflict.

YES, BUT DO YOU FEEL LIKE THE GOVERNMENT IS YOUR GOVERNMENT, YOUR COUNTRY, AND IF SOMEONE SAID IT WASN'T YOU WOULD STAND UP AND PROTECT IT?
Ken: I can't be a part of a government that carries out the action that this one does. You talk about superb Israel and Palistine, you talk about Nicaragua. What the people did to the people of Hiroshima and Nagisaki, slavery... I can't put myself with that. It's hard to think I live on someone else's land, but it's true, it belongs to the indians.

Kevin:
This is my homeland. I feel an attraction to it but I don't think our government is the true America our forefathers set out create. There is so much shit you can get caught up in. You got to live your life and ignore the laws that conflict with your beliefs. Don't ever ssay this is the law, and even if you don't agree, obey it, cause you will die inside.

WHAT IS THE BASIC MESSAGE AS A BAND?
Kevin: Love yourself!

Rich:
There is room for everybody in this world and it's like there is plenty of food for all and people shouldn't be deprived of things that should be part of life.

Kevin:
You see poor people on the streets and it just makes you want to lash out against the government.

Rich:
Yah, poor people when the supermarkets are stocked with food.

Kevin:
Stop creating violence, stop creating hatred and just give what you do have.

HAVE PEOPLE EVER CALLED YOU HIPPIES?
Ken: Yeah, I think a lot of people try to make an analogy between people who are trying to do something and the 60's. But when you look back in history there have always been people trying to do something about society. The 60's is just when everything got in the forefront and its what people remember.

Kevin:
There is this old drunk that comes into the bike shop where I work and he says, "Look at Jesus Christ, he was the nicest motherfucker on earth and look what they did to him, they killed him." That about says it. You can't change peoples attitudes, you got to change yourself and they will follow.

WHAT OTHER THINGS ARE YOU DOING BESIDES THE BAND?
Rich: I'm trying to follow the norms and go to school. You can make a difference by educatiing yourself. If you just bum around the streets and never express your feelings you're not going to get anywhere.

Ken:
I'm trying to keep myself at a educational level where I can be effective toward the movement. I also belong to a revolutionary organization call All-African Peoples Revolutionary Party and we are trying to promote general education to get the word around. I think we all try and promote peace in our own way.

Rich:
We don't agree on everything but were open-minded to learn. I learn things everyday.

Ken:
Me and Rich stay out for hours arguing over things and it just makes us want to know the facts. We will go rad and look up things to prove the other guy is wrong. Its part of self-education.

SO BASICALLY YOU FEEL WE ALL NEED TO EDUCATE OURSELVES?
Kevin: Never assume you know the truth because things are going to buckle in your face.

Ken:
If something happens today and there is a change and people are not educated the change will not be real. The government can also rake everyone into a hold but if the people are educated and they see a dictator coming they can say no man.

YOU SAW THOSE GUYS AT THE SHOW STARTING A LOT OF VIOLENCE, WHAT DO YOU FEEL ABOUT THAT?
Kevin: A lot of people were getting really worked up about that, and fighting back. That's exactly what they wanted. You can either do that or bow down and say i'm not going to fight you, you silly. It takes the wind out of their sails.

Rich:
Communication and education are the answer.

Kevin:
Fear perpetuates violence. You got to sit down and decide what you fear and erase it. So after what it is you are afraid of and turn your fear into love for brother man.

ANY LAST COMMENTS OR SUGGESTIONS?
Ken: My conclusion is that in the last couple of years has caused me to grow a lot because I've been around people who operate on the same level....we're trying to move in the same direction and make society better.

Rich:
I'm in the band because I love music and because of what we sing about. I'm tired of those top 40 bands singing about lust and sex. We're trying to express our opinions in music and put backbone into it. More people want to listen to music than learn so if you have the right combination you will accomplish both. Teach through music.

Kevin:
Well, I don't have as many frustrations since I joined the band. But I would like to see people get out of there cars and get a job they feel good about. And maybe ride your bike to work, slow down and take a look at the people around you. The main problem is the morning rush hour traffic. Also, contact us at (ADDRESS AND PHONE NUMBER DELETED) and talk about anything. We play anywhere.

REVIEWS: Four Eyes - "Double Rockin' It"

Four Eyes - "Double Rockin' It" CD-R (no label).
What can I say about this release (which seems to be a compiled release of their two demos). But that it makes me wanna shout that I was happy that Nixon revealed that he was a closet transvestite. Everyone of the tracks on this disc is hilarious and catchy as fuck. there's great ditties that are definitely pseudo-TV inspired on this here discy-poo. such as "Lost In Space", I Want To Be Your Dylan Mckaye" (whoever that is. I will never know or want to know. hehe.), and many other memorable tv-related tunes. there's tons on tunes that gratify nerd power for all it's worth. Songs like "Compucore", "Nerd Power Part. 2", "Nerds In Space" and countless other fine helpings of nerdom. standout tunes would have to be the above mentioned, "Prison Song", "Nerdy Girl" and their takes on Buddy Holly's "Oh Boy" and G.G. Allin's "Hard Candy Cock." "The Say It Booger" track had me rolling and brought a tear to my eye ( I just love that movie, man!). The only downfall that I can see with this release is the sound quality. It's a safe bet that this was taken from a tape source. There's traces of tape hiss on this and occasionally you can hear a drop out from an obviously worn out master mix tape. sometimes the sound is so muddy that you can't hear the drums or guitar track . But don't that detract you from getting this fine release. Besides these few measly minor flaws I highly recommend buying this release. It's worth of anyone's collection. I give it 4 out of 5 shakes of my yaknowhatsits. (loser!)

REVIEWS: Mynock

Mynock-"No Title" 7" EP (Tortellini Records).
This is definitely a great 7" and the first in a batch of 3 7"s put about by these great Sactoe punksters' Mynock (see LP review for my rave on Mynock). What can I say about this record other than it's great. What makes it special is that it's probably states the bands' style best. Fun, energetic and filled with a great sense of humor to boot. Plus it features some of their best songs by far. Songs that once you hear they tend to stick in yer mind and you'll catch yerself humming them in yer sleep (I know I do). This features great Mynock ditties such as "Games 4 F.U.N", "Drinkin' On An Empty Stomach" and Notta Surf Song Brah(Drive)". Plus it features one of my favorite acoustic songs of all time "City Of Tokyo" (sang by their former git player Patrick). God, I just love that song and it makes me long to go to Tokyo every time I hear it. Plus Patrick's singing is so heartfelt that you can sympathize with his lyrics. Rounding out this piece of vinyl is a special ska version of their song "Pigs And A Blanket" called "Ska Pigs And A Blanket". I remember being on the studio floor and trying my hardest to not laugh when hearing them record this version. The sheer lunacy of the track brings a smile to anyones face. Not yer typcal Mynock track by far. It's great indeed. An great added touch is the photo collage cover of this disc. Loads of quick snapshots of past and present members of Mynock and some great candid moments. Brings to mind feelings of friendship, beer drinking and togetherness. Especially love the two photos that yers truly is in from the fabled "Phantom Menace" screening roadtrip in Reno. I highly recommend getting this record. I give it 5 outta 5 shakes of my yaknowwhatits. Buy it dammit. Tortellinni Records / P.O. Box 189634 / Sacramento, CA 95818-9634. (loser!)

Mynock-"Don't Even Core" 7" EP (Tortellinni Records).
2nd in a fine triple threat release of great 7"'s from Mynock. This one being probably the most diverse one and unique of the bunch. Why you say? Cuz it contains the most of the alternate recorded versions of their songs from the sessions that produced their collective output of releases. The band recorded ska, joke and hardcore versions of their songs for fun and this release takes the lion's share of those tracks. I love it for just that. It captures the sure creativity and lunacy that makes of these fine lads. You get special hardcore versions of "Pigs And A Blanket" and "Notta Surf Song Brah" . Featuring drummer/vocalist singing in very aggresive harsh hoarse pissed off manuerism that works perfecty (somehow it makes the songs even better). Plus there's an hilarious take on their song "Hellapission" called "Hellabustopin'". Basically a studio voiceover track of Keith and Manny having a conversation at a bus stop. It's fairly humorous and will get you laughing big time. I know I do. Also, includes are Mynock greats such as "American Flag" (with Brian Ballentine). "So-Co Crew", and SpinkDrescials". the cover is pretty hilarious too (esp. the pissing one on the back). Definitely, a must have in my book. I give it 5 outta 5 shakes of my yaknowhatsits. (Tortellinni Records). (loser!)

Mynock-"Zero Five. Nineteen. One Thousand Nine Hundred And Ninety Nine 7" EP (Tortellinni Records).
Gawd, probably the record holder for longest titled release in my huge record collection (well maybe). Hehe. But definitely worthy of inclusion in it or anyones record collection. Hmm, another great disc by those Sactoe punks. Third in a great assualt of Mynock 7"s that released at the same time. This one features some great tracks and fan favorites to boot. Plus the Star Wars tone/leanings of the band is made fairly obvious on this one. Just look at the cover of the Mynock creature featured in Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back. Plus, yer gotta great blatant Star Wars influenced tracks such as "Dagobah System" and Tarkins Confidence". Makes me wanna dig out my Star Wars movies and toys and have a good ole Star Wars induced orgy of a great time (plus makes me have really naughty dreams of yers truly and Princess Leia too. Mmm mmm crack that whip baby!). Plus ya get a great drinking song in the form of "Drinkin' On an Empty Stomach". A ska version of "First Dee" entitled "Second Dee". Mynock faves "Choose' and "Impressions" make their presense known here too. All-in-all this is a really well-rounded out piece of vinyl that is worthy of dozens and dozen of listens. Damn, fetch yelself up two copies while yer at it. Cuz ya might just wear out that the essential first one. Ok, it's seems fairly obvious--i'm a big fan of Mynock--so shoot me!--hehe! I personally give this 4 1/2 outta 5 shakes of my yaknowhatits (loser!)

Mynock "Chewy" CD (CD-R) (Tortellinni Reck-Whords).
Damn, I have been waiting for this for a while and it took me by surprise when it came out. Mynock are probably my favorite local band along with Red Tape and Brian Ballentine and Friends. This CD is a lot different than the first to me, for one because they have a new guitarist (Mick) since the last one and I think he adds a lot to their sound because he is extremely good. As for sound quality this CD rocks! The only complaint that I have is that the drums sound kinda.....I dont know, like they were recorded in a different studio? I mean not the drum playing because Keith is such a great drummer but I mean the way they were recorded or mixed sounds kinda empty I guess, but enough of that. This CD has I think 3 or 4 songs that were also on the last CD and they sound better then ever. One thing I was hoping is that this CD would have the song "Punk Rawk Girl" on it, I have hered them play that song so many times live, it's great and yes it is on the CD, but my favorite Mynock song of all is "Nine To Five," this is like the ultimate feel good song and is about work and of course drinking since this is Mynock. All the musicianship is great on this CD we all know Keith is a bad-ass drummer, Manny can play bass better then probably anyone in any of the local punk bands and Mick I think can play anything with strings, also the fact that Keith sings while playing drums is so great. The other great surprise for this CD the country version of the title track "Chewy" which starts out as an old man telling a young boy a story, it's really funny and has a great blues style guitar solo. For anyone that hasn't heard Mynock before they play really fast punk most of the time but this CD has some slow country sounding tunes too, all their songs are ultra sing-a-longs and make you want to drink a beer and forget about everything. Song list for this CD is: Chewy, Simplicity, Drinking Again, I Fell Short, Fascism Failed, Punk Rawk Girl, Games For F.U.N., Nine To Five, Harvest Time For The Lazy and Cunttree Chewy. (Tortellinni Reck-Whords P.O. Box 189634, Sacramento, CA 95818-9634) (Cory Brat)

INTERVIEW: Sins Of The Flesh

Sins Of The Flesh were a heavily political Sacramento hardcore punk band that were together from 1985-1990. Formed from the ashes of Industrial Hate, the band became on the best bands to ever come out of the Sacramento area. Their sound was a blistering barrage of metallic-tinged hardcore with a strong political edge. In their short career, they released one full length LP entitled "Greed", seven-inch and were featured on various compilations. One of my personal favorite all-time bands to ever come out of Sacramento.

This is an old interview that i conducted through the mail in the summer of 1988 with Sins of the Flesh.

Give Us A Brief History:
Ken: We started as Industrial Hate in 1984 and then in the summer of 1985 out singer Mike Psycho left the band and then we changed our name to Sins Of The Flesh. Finally our old guitarist. Robert "Chicken Scratch" Amada quit in October. In 1986 I moved to guitar and got Kevin to play bass.

What Do Your Lyrics Deal With?
Kevin: We practically have a song for every major political issue facing us today. From Capitalism to Socialism (social anarchy is my goal), Anti-War, No Nukes, Technology, Religion, Apartheid, Human and Animal Rights. We don't fuck around with words, our lyrics are blunks and to the point. Straightforward, man.

Ken: Though our songs are political. I can say they are very personal because everything we do in our personal lives in being seen politically and economically by those who have power in this society. so we try to tie what we do and see around us into our lyrical content.

There's A Apparent Metal Influence In Your Sound. What Do You Think About The Current Death Metal Trend?
Kevin: All our songs have to pass the test of heaviness-if they aren't heavy, they're history.

It's an attitude. A good, heavy, thrashing tune make me feel like roaring. It builds up inside and comes screaming out with all my gripes against the system mingled together. All good metal music does that. It's like the anti-rockers say, we are possessed by guitar demons! i hope or music makes people feel like raging, going out and fucking with the system a bit and with enough rage to never get caught!
As far as the death metal trend, I don't follow trends personal-if it makes people rage, it's fine with me. Metal music is the ultimate medium for expressing anger!!!! (okay)

Ken: As long as the bands keep true to their beliefs and do not compromise lyrically, it's alright.

What does "Sins Of The Flesh" mean?
Kevin: We all different ideas about that. This is how is how I look at it. Humanity has passes through three ages. The 1st age was nature revealing herself to humankind. The 2nd stage was humankind beginning to understand nature, the great age of philosophy. The 3rd age, the one were in now is the age if manipulation, humans transform nature. This age began long before Christ and is just about to come to an end. Materialism appeals directly to our egos and separates us from our mother, Earth.

To me, Sins Of The Flesh are any aspect of society that serve to satisfy our immediate "need" for material goods and put us on that speciecistic pedistal that promotes our image of master of the earth. By holding on to the dubious title of "Master," we lock ourselves into the physical plane of existence and are doomed to discontent until we realize that we must have humility and surrender to the Earth and heal it. When we do this, we are at one with the universe and will transcend to a higher level of consciousness. This material age is ending now, on August 17, the planets will come into alignment and a new age of cleansing will emerge-by surrendering to Mother Earth we can redeem ourselves from the Sins Of The Flesh.

Which Members Are Vegetarians?
Kevin: Kenny and I are vegetarians. We realized that if we hope to end oppression on all levels, we have to start with ourselves and that means cutting out habits that promote oppression. The meat industry is about the most oppressive of all. They've chopped living individualism down to the level of machinery and their operations don't give give any consideration to the natural harmonic ways of nature--they're wasteful, cruel, specicist--90% of the world's grains feed livestock which in turn only feed about 1/8 of the world populous!

Ken: It just doesn't seem right for me to take a life of an animal when i can survive without it (meat).

Any Plan For Any Upcoming Release Material?
Kevin: We plan to make a recording at the end of this month for an LP to be released this year or beginning of next year.

Ken: It should be out on Street Records (ex-KDVS DJ Tom Street's record label).

Sins Of The Flesh disbanded a fews years after this interview was conducted when Kevin (bass player) moved away from Sacramento. Ken Beisley (lead vocals/guitar) later joined Deep Six and Filibuster. He currently plays lead guitar in the Sacramento Oi! band, Pressure Point. I don't know the current whereabouts of Kevin or Tony (drummer) today.
